Why Use a Doula?

There are many benefits of having a doula.  Ultimately, women build a rapport with someone who will be there throughout labour and birth, providing a feeling of continuous security and comfort.

Studies have shown that the presence of a doula during labour REDUCES

  • the length of labour itself
  • the need for an epidural
  • the need for a caesarean

It has also been shown that if a woman has been supported by a doula they suffer significantly LESS

  • anxiety
  • low-self esteem
  • post-natal depression

A doula is more than just a friendly face during your labour.  As a professional birth attendant, a doula is knowledgeable about birth and can help you to understand what is going on, what is normal and can provide the information to allow you to make informed choices around your birth.

"Continuous support from a doula during labor provides physical and emotional benefits for mother and health bonuses for their babies. With less medical interventions, fewer complications, and shorter hospital stays, there may be financial savings as well" - Harvard Health Letter
